PATTERNS in your Immediate Environment

Work with a partner to:

  1. Search for patterns in or around the school (do not go off the school property). Use the chart below as your guide.

You must select one factor from at least 3 columns for each pattern.

You cannot repeat a factor more than twice.

Check a them as you go to keep track.

How many patterns can you find? Be as creative as possible.

SYMBOLS in your Immediate Environment

Work with a partner to:

  1. Search for symbols in or around the school. You must find examples of both pictograms and ideograms.

How many can you find? Really look!

  2. Photograph (or draw) them and for each record the type (pictogram/ ideogram) and meaning of the symbol.

Final Product

With your partner create power point slides containing the following information:

Information about those patterns

WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHEN, WHERE?

Who would be advantaged by the use of symbols in our environment?

What do we mean by a "pattern"?

Why do we use symbols in our environment?

When is a symbol different to a logo?

Where are you likely to see symmetrical patterns in your local environment?
