第12回　Authentic Opportunities: Visual Arts Classes at SIS （本物に触れる教育：ビジュアルアートの授業より）

Yukari has lived in New York for six years. She has arrived back in Japan at the end of Grade 6, and is ready to start Grade 7 at SIS. She feels a little nervous on her first day in Art class when she meets her new teacher, from Australia, and her new classmates from Japan, New Zealand, Korea, China, Sweden and North America.

ニューヨークに６年間暮らしたユカリ。小学六年生の終わりに帰国し、７年生としてSISに入学。美術の授業初日は緊張した様子です。担当教員はオーストラリア出身。クラスメートのバックグラウンドは日本、ニュージーランド、韓国、中国、スウェーデン、北米、と様々です。

Some of the students, like Yukari, have lived overseas for several years.　Others have always lived in Japan. She meets Sarah, a Canadian OIS student who has lived all her life in Toyonaka and they sit together at the same table with Koji, an SIS student who is studying in English for the first time ever, and Nan Jun, a Korean-American who attended OIS elementary school but who has now entered SIS.

ユカリと同じように海外で何年も暮らした生徒もいればずっと日本で暮らしてきた生徒もいます。大阪で生まれ育ちOIS(併設の大阪インターナショナルスクール)の生徒であるカナダ人のサラ、日本の小学校から来て、初めて英語での勉強をしているコウジ、OISの小学校にずっと通っていて最近SISに入学した韓国系アメリカ人のナンジュンと同じ机になりました。

Yukari and her classmates are excited to get their new visual workbooks. This year they are going to study Hokusai, Breughel and finally African-American storytelling in the quilt-making of Faith Ringold.  Ringold’s colorful quilts capture a wide variety of people who have influenced her life; Yukari’s major artwork this term is to compose a painting of her own influences in art class. She includes artists that she has already studied this term in the painting alongside her new classmates who she has come to know well: Can you find Hokusai and Faith Ringold sketching together with Yukari and her friends?

ユカリもクラスの他の生徒もビジュアルアートクラスのワークブックを受け取ってワクワクしています。今年は北斎とブリューゲルを学び、そしてフェイスリンゴールドのキルト作品を用いて、アフリカ系アメリカ人がキルトの中で物語る方法について学びます。リンゴールドの色彩豊かなキルトには彼女の人生に影響を与えた多くの人々が描かれています。ユカリの今学期のメイン作品は、アートの授業において彼女が受けた影響を絵に表したものです。彼女の絵には今学期のクラスで学んだ芸術家とクラスで仲良くなったクラスメートが並んで描かれています。この絵の中に、ユカリやクラスメートたちと一緒にスケッチをしている北斎とフェイスリンゴールドがいます。みつかりますか？

In Grade 8 Yukari’s Art class studies the work of the artist, Marc Chagall. This trimester the students compose an image of the important relationships in their lives. One of Yukari’s classmates, Lisa, portrays herself with the Japanese and American flags. As well as the musical instrument that she loves to play; you can also clearly see her favorite sport.  She plays soccer for the school team and would never miss a practice.

８年生。ユカリの美術のクラスはシャガールの作品を研究します。今学期生徒たちは、それぞれのこれまでの人生における大切な人間関係をイメージとしてまとめた作品を作ります。ユカリのクラスメートであるリサは、アメリカと日本両国の国旗と自分自身を描いています。リサの好きなスポーツが何であるかは一目瞭然ですね、大好きな楽器と一緒に描かれています。リサは校内のサッカークラブに所属し絶対に練習を休まない女の子です。

The next trimester in Grade 8, Yukari is very excited by the fact that her class will be working on pottery. While investigating the canopic jars of ancient Egypt and the art of contemporary American artist, Frances Whitehead, Yukari creates her own investigative digital portfolio. She researches an environmental issue using a laptop in the art room; she has chosen to investigate deforestation and, as she works, she is impressed to find that whatever each student’s English language skills, everyone in the class is working seriously, researching busily in their first language. The teacher teaches the class coil, slab and modeling techniques, and then slowly but steadily, Yukari builds her own canopic jar.  After the jar has been fired and glazed, she carefully places an image inside before sealing the top closed with a lid.  What has she put in her jar?  It is the forests that she hopes to protect for future generations.

８年生の秋学期、美術クラスは陶芸をすると聞き、ユカリはまたワクワクしています。古代エジプトの天蓋つきの壷と近代アメリカの芸術家であるフランシスホワイトヘッドのことを調べる作業をしつつ、ユカリ独自のリサーチポトフォーリオを作成します。美術教室でノートパソコンを使ってのリサーチ、彼女のテーマは森林破壊です。クラスメートたちそれぞれが、自分の得意な言語でリサーチをし、英語力に関係なく、真剣に課題に取り組む様子は感動的です。先生から、とぐろ巻き、土台、立体表現のテクニックを教えてもらい、慎重に、しかししっかりと自分の天蓋つき壷を作り上げていきます。壷を焼いて釉薬をつけたあとに、内側に丁寧に図案を書きいれ、そしてふたを閉じます。ユカリの壷の中には何が入っていると思いますか？後世に残すべき森がユカリの壷の中に入っています。

By the end of Grade 8 Yukari has learnt about herself, her classmates, her community and her environment, as well as the many artists from around the world she has met along the way. Not only having developed her painting and composition skills, she has also become proud of her ability to mix color with care and precision. More than anything, though, she knows that her artwork is meaningful; she incorporates concept into her art and she’s ready to take on the challenge next year of joining Art elective classes, studying alongside artists from other grades, up to Grade 12.  She may find herself to be one of the youngest in the elective class next term, but she’s ready.

８年生が終わるころには、ユカリは授業を通じて多くの世界中の芸術家のことを学びましたが、また、自分自身のこと、クラスメートのこと、自分を取り巻く人々や環境のことについても深く知ることができました。絵を描いたり作品を作ることに上達しただけではなく、慎重に、そして的確に色を混ぜ合わせることができるようになったことに誇りを感じています。さらにそれ以上に、自分の美術作品は意味深いものであり、概念を芸術に取り入れることができるのだと知りました。来年９年生になれば高校生向けの選択授業をとることができます。１２年生までの上級生と同じクラスでは、最年少かもしれませんが、もう準備は万端です。

(SIS Visual Arts courses are compulsory in Grades 7 and 8. Mixed age trimester length elective courses for Grades 9 – 12 include: Photography, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Drawing, Printmaking, Personal Programmes, Painting, Ceramics, Fibre, Advertising and Living Spaces).
