DESCRIPTION,
BACKGROUND, CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Schools2schools is a joint SOIS project to raise funds to build, in
the spring of 2009, a school in Prey Veng, an
impoverished rural province in Cambodia, 100 km east of Phnom Penh.
Fundraising was initiated by the OIS graduating class of 2009. Schools2schools aims to support the operation of the school in the
future.
This
project works in conjunction with a Tokyo-based nonprofit organization
called American Assistance for
Cambodia/Japan Relief for Cambodia.
The
synergistic nexus of OIS, SIS and the Cambodia school can be
represented as a triangle in which all three schools interact with each
other - learning, teaching, sharing, growing. It should be stressed that
the relationship is not a one-way charity street from SOIS to the Cambodia
school. Through visits and correspondence and study and reflection, it is
hoped that SOIS students will gain an education that they, too, would not
have had.
OIS
grade 12 students are currently raising awareness of issues related to
poverty and the fight for universal access to education by disseminating
posters and fliers around the school, posting articles on its webpage, and
giving presentations to students, teachers, and parents.
In
May 2009, twelve OIS seniors will travel to Kamchay Mear village to visit
the completed school, to attend its opening ceremony, and to interact with
the students there.
Schools2Schools（スクールズトゥスクールズ）はSISとOISのジョイントプロジェクトです。 貧困に苦しむカンボジアの農村地に、2009年5月までに学校を建てるための資金提供をし、その後継続して学校運営をサポートします。
MISSION
The SOIS schools2schools project, through the combined efforts
of the SOIS community and in cooperation with American Assistance for
Cambodia/Japan Relief for Cambodia, provides improved educational
opportunities to rural Cambodian children.
To this end, schools2schools works with students, teachers, parents
and other school community members to raise funds and raise awareness about
the importance of providing education for the world’s young people.
Through this effort, schools2schools strives to:
1. help achieve the SOIS goal of developing
“informed,
creative, caring individuals contributing to a global community”;
2. support one of the SOIS shared beliefs
“that it is important for the two
schools to continually explore ways to come together because this brings
great benefit to our students”;
3. contribute to the achievement of two of
the UN Millennium Development
Goals: universal
primary education and global partnership
(target 5 – new technology).
BELIEFS
Schools2schools
believes that:

children, boys and girls, have the right to an education;
·
the gift
of education is one of the greatest gift of all;
·
raising
awareness is more important than raising money;
·
two-way exchange
between SOIS and the Cambodia
school is essential.

NAME
The
shools2schools name reflects the two-school nature of the project as
OIS and SIS work together to provide education for hundreds of Cambodian children
who otherwise would not have it – two schools contributing to another
school. As we OIS and SIS students and staff and community work together to
benefit Cambodian students, we enrich ourselves, too.
スクールズトゥ（２）スクールズ・・・学校が学校のために・・・この名称は、教育を受けるすべもない数百のカンボジアの子供達にその機会を提供するプロジェクトをSISとOISの２校が協力して行うという、我が校ならではの特性を表しています。

· Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the
world.
· Cambodia is within reasonable travel distance
and cost for school trips.
· AAfC provides an inexpensive option to
fund the building and operation of a school.
· AAfC, based in Tokyo, is in-country, bilingual, and
flexible.
· AAfC provides several inexpensive
options for school improvements, thus creating several affordable
opportunities for future projects.
· Two-way exchange between SOIS students
and Cambodia
students is available.
· A finished
school provides an attractive community service trip destination in the
future for OIS seniors and SIS juniors.
· OIS and SIS
younger grades might use the school as an impetus to study poverty and
education issues, and can make and maintain connections with the new school
via letters and e-mail.
