Grade Eight Information and Design Technology

Task Instructions

The Problem

For this project you are required to design and produce a website that will advertise an event that takes place in your school or community this year.

Investigate

Investigation is an essential stage in the design cycle. You are expected to identify the problem, develop a design brief and formulate a design specification. You are expected to write in your design folder, saying where you get your information from.

Design brief: This is your response to the challenge, showing how you intend to solve the problem you have been presented with. This will guide your investigation as you work to develop a more detailed design specification.

Design specification: This a detailed description of the details with which a design must fit. This is a full list of facts such as conditions, dimensions, software, process and methods that are important for the designer and for the user. Your website will need to comply with the design specification you write.

In the Investigation section of your design folder you need to explain the problem clearly. You need to critically investigate the problem, choosing the best information from a broad range of appropriate sources. You need to describe how you will know that the website you will create will follow your designs.

In the investigation section of your design folder you need to include the following:

  • a design brief,

  • a design specification,

  • an explanation of the problem and

  • a statement of where and what your research has been

Design

You are are expected to create several possible designs that follow the design specification and to evaluate these to decide which one you will use.

Once you have selected one design, you need to explain your choice and state how it will meet you design specification.

In the design section of your design folder you need to include the following:

  • a range of different designs, (at least two)

  • a statement explaining which design you have chosen, saying why you have chosen it

Plan

You are expected to construct a plan to create your chosen website that has a series of logical steps, and that makes effective use of resources and time.

You are expected to evaluate the plan and justify any changes you might make to the design.

In the plan section of your design folder you need to include the following:

  • a plan that has a series of steps, in the order you will do them, to create your website

Create

You are expected to document, with a series of screenshots or photographs and a dated record, the process of making your website, including when and how you use tools, materials and techniques. You are expected to follow your plan, to evaluate the plan and to justify any changes you make to the plan while you are creating the website.

You are to competently use correct techniques and software. You should follow your plan and explain any changes you might make, and create a website of high quality using the resources available

In the create section of your design folder you need to include the following:

  • a series of screenshots or photographs that shows the stages of you went through in creating your website.

Evaluate

You are expected to evaluate the website by comparing it to your designs and plans. You are expected to explain how the website could be improved.

You need to evaluate the success of the website by saying if it follows the designs and plans and also by asking the opinion of at least one other person.

In the evaluate section of your design folder you need to include the following:

  • a series of statements evaluating your efforts

  • a statement evaluating how well your website fits your design specification

  • a statement from at least one other person giving his/her opinion of your website.
