Read all of this article - THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Social and Ethical Issues:

  • What is the reliability of predictions based on computer models, for example, weather, global warming?

  • What are the economic effects of the use of models to design and test new products?

  • What are the security issues involved in military simulations?

  • What is the social impact of reliance on simulations to examine issues of public policy?

  • What is the responsibility of the designer for accuracy of assumptions underlying the model?

  • What are the ethical considerations involved in deciding when to use models or simulations to ensure human safety?

Knowledge of Technology:

  • computer model

  • computer simulation

  • feedback loop

  • faulty or hidden assumptions

  • extent and effect of the simplification of reality

  • extent to which the phenomenon being modelled is understood

  • processing power needed to create complex models

  • visualization of information

  • correspondence of the model with reality.

Developing new medicines is usually a long and costly process. Now, methods are being developed at Norwegian University of Science and Technology – that allow some of the testing required in drug development that normally take years to complete to be done in just a fraction of the time. With the help of mathematical calculations and computer simulations, researchers can quickly find out if a substance has the qualities and characteristics of an effective drug before it is tested in the real world.

  1. A well constructed drug testing simulation would include feedback loops. Define feedback.

  2. Distinguish between a computer model and simulation.

  3. Explain why a drug company might be concerned about using drug simulations.

  4. Discuss two social and/or ethical issues that arise from the use of computer models and simulations to test new drugs.
