Press Release

This year`s Pacific Islands Club-Guam International 5K/10K/Marathon Road Race will be its 14th. Starting with only 300 participants in 1991, these road races have widely gained the popularity among local runners and international guests of all ages and abilities. Guam Visitors Bureau awarded it the Most Outstanding Local Tourism Event for the Year of 2000.

Due to the high demand by serious off-island runners, the half marathon was added in 2003. Over 1100 runners participated in the 2004 event.

The 5Km event is viewed as a Fun Run with a distance that is short enough to even allow recreational walkers/joggers to compete without much difficulty. In past events, a large number of walkers, parents with baby strollers, and families with small children, as well as the handicapped, have enjoyed this distance and the awards party held afterwards at the Pacific Pavilion, which is located in the indoor tennis courts of PIC`s spectacular waterpark. This race also has its serious runners who run to challenge the terrain of the course and other athletes who vie for the top finisher`s spot. The top three male and female finishers of the 5km race will earn $500, $250, and $100 respectively.

The 10km event has been the main event of the competition. Top male and female winners receive $1,000 each, while second and third finishers receive $500 and $250 respectively. Course record setters will receive an additional $500. Course records are: Overall Male Division set by Mr. Tomonori Onitsuka of Japan at 30:59 in 1998 and 36:24 in the Overall Female Division set by Ms. Yoko Yagi of Japan in 2002.

The half marathon legitimates the PIC races as Guam`s largest annual professional sports event. As with the 10K, top male and female winners receive $1,000 each, while second and third finishers receive $500 an $250 respectively. Since the half marathon was added in 2003, no monetary course record was awarded. This year course record setters will receive an additional $500. The course record for 2004 was set by Mr. Satoshi Emoto of Japan at 1:13:52 and Ms. Gi Sook Moon of Korea at 1:22:39.

Olympic gold medallist, Frank Shorter, has agreed to run in the 14th annual race as a guest runner. Shorter became the first American since 1904 to win the gold medal in the men`s marathon at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Shorter crossed the finish line in 2 hours and 12 minutes and 19.8 seconds. At the time, it was the second fastest time ever in the Olympic marathon. He followed up that performance at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal with a silver medal. No American man has medalled in the Olympic marathon since.

Since 1995, the PIC Road Race has had a sister-race relationship with Fujiyoshida Fire Festival Road Race. This race takes place in the city of Mount Fuji in Japan every August. PIC`s top male and female local finishers are invited to the Fujiyoshida Fire Festival Road Race, while their top female and male finishers are invited to the PIC Road Race.
