Japan is the ‘mecca of shopping’. Here are some of our more popular local stores.

FOOD

Supermarkets Kansai Supa. Onohara Higashi and Mino (near Dr. Sono’s).

Co-Op. On the 171 towards Kobe at the Kayano 3-chome intersection.

Ikari. On Route 43 towards Mino station, and in Toyonaka near the intersection of Routes 43 and 2.

Nodaya. On the west side of Route 423, near Com Art Hill.

Peacock. Kita Senri, Senri Chuo, and Yamada.

Daiei. Senri Chuo.

Pororoca. Onohara Higashi.

Supermarket hours are usually 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. They are closed on the days listed by each individual supermarket. Check the display boards.

Others Mycall Shopping Centre in Ibaraki. Vivre and Saty department stores, cinemas, restaurants and shops.

Japan Discount Store. On the 171 at Onohara Higashi and also near the intersection of route 43.

100 Yen Shops. Everywhere.

FBC and Price Club in Kobe. These stores offer a good range of imported foods and FBC offers mail order.

Tengu Natural Foods. By mail order.

Kobe Grocer. Tor Road, Kobe.

Convenience Stores 7-11, Lawson and Family Mart. open every day. These stores will also accept payment of your major utilities.

CLOTHING

Start at Kita Senri and Senri Chuo shopping centres.

Uniglo stores offer larger fittings and are relatively cheap. Stores are at the Onohara intersection on Route 171, behind KFC, and in Midorigaoka, not far from Dr. Sono’s and Kansai Supa.

The best buys can be made at SSOK, but you need a membership card, or a friend who has one. SSOK stores are located on Com Art Hill near Senri Chuo. SSOK runs a free shuttle bus services between its main building and Senri Chuo. Bus stops are located beside Route 423 near the library, and a short walk from the North Exit of Senri Chuo train station.

Shinsaibashi and Umeda in Osaka have fabulous shopping. The largest department stores are found around Umeda station.

Tell Me Salons. In Kita Senri and Senri Chuo.

Boys. At Kita Senri.

TOY SHOPS

Hankyu and Peacock Department stores in Senri Chuo, and Vivre and Peacock in Kita Senri.

Ban Bans near big Co-Op on the 171. The store itself is on the road that curves around to the Mino City Office.

Japan Discount and the 100-Yen stores carry a small amount of toys.

Toypia Iseya on the 3rd floor of the PAL building in Senri Chuo. Just near Vive de France bread shop.l

Toys ‘R’ Us on the 171 towards Kyoto, the school side of the Ibaraki entrance to the Meishin.

CRAFT AND DIY

Tokyu Hands at Esaka Station on the Midosuji Line.

The Loft in Umeda.

Konan DIY store at the Imamiya intersection on Route 171.

BOOKSHOPS

Kinokuniya Bookstore in Umeda and Shinsaibashi offer a large selection of books and magazines in English.

FBC.

MUSIC

Mikki Gakku Shops. For instruments etc in Shinsaibashi and at other locations in the city.

Virgin Megastore. Near Mikki Gakku and the Sony Tower in Shinsaibashi. Take exit 6 on the Midosuji subway..

Tower Records in Umeda.

CD shops are everywhere, but most are shelved like books with their ‘spines’ showing. As titles are listed in katakana, try Virgin and Tower Records for an easier browse.
