Season
recap The 2008-09 season was one of the most successful in Sabers history. The team placed second at the very competitive Great Wall Shootout in Beijing in November 2008. The Sabers used the early-season experience gained in China to run the table in regular season league play in the Western Japan Activities Association (WJAA), posting a record of five wins and no losses. After a disappointing fifth place finish in the WJAA tournament, the Sabers bounced back to win the inaugural Dragon Cup at Yokohama International School, where the team won four games over two days to bring home only the second tournament championship in school history. The 2008-09 team saw three seniors graduate – Satoki Nakamura, Masaki Moriaka, and Jun Sakaguchi. While these seniors will be sorely missed, the Sabers have a wealth of experience returning and so the team has high hopes for the 2009-10 season. Kei Suzuki, Naoto Takahashi and Shun Kanezaki will be returning starters.

Off-season training Because the Sabers are usually outsized by their opponents, the players rely on superior speed and fitness. Development of this level of fitness begins in the off-season as the Sabers hit the weight room for strength training and the field for speed work. One feature of the Sabers off-season training programme is its skill and fitness achievement tests. Players are encouraged to pass all tests; those who do receive a special t-shirt and, more important, more playing time. |

Coaches Head coach: Peter Heimer Assistant coach: Rodney Ray
The Sabers men’s team has had only two head coaches since the
foundation of the two schools. The first was the legendary Steve
Bonnette, SOIS music teacher who stepped down from the head coaching
position after the 1998-99 season. Bonnette’s long-time assistant, Peter
Heimer, took over the reins for the 1999-2000 season and has been head
coach since. When SOIS ended its participation in the Asia Pacific
Activities Conference (APAC) in 2008 after thirteen years, Heimer was
the only boys’ coach in the conference who had attended all thirteen
APAC basketball tournaments. He holds the all-time SOIS basketball
record for coaching wins (and losses). |

Managers Basketball managers put in as much time as – perhaps even more than – the players and coaches. Without their cheerful assistance and dedication, the team could not function as well as it does. Thank you to the three 2008-09 managers: Wakako Tameoka, Nahoko Shinomiya and Miyu Sakaime. After three years of managing the team, Wakako graduates this year. Her leadership will be missed and the team thanks her for her efforts. Nahoko and Miyu learned much from Wakako and they will be great managers next year. |
