Newly Observed 5πu 1/2→5dR Bands and 5πu 1/2→5dσR, 5πu 3/2→7sR, 10σg→6pσR, 5πu 1/2→7sR, 5πu 3/2→6dR, and 5πu 3/2→8sR Bands

In the fluorescence excitation spectra in the wavelength regions of λex = 117.1 − 119.9 nm, one can find weak progressions of the bending ν2 vibration. The 5d Rydberg orbitals are classified as σg, πg and δg and the quantum defect for each orbital can be different. At present these weak bands are assigned to the 5dπ or 5dδ Rydberg bands with different symmetries from that for the strong Rydberg bands observed in the absorption spectrum.

The quantum yield is determined to be 0.74 for the exciting light, λex = 110.5 nm. High quantum yields for XeF* excimer formation have been observed for the broad background absorption bands; the maximum quantum yield is recorded to be around 0.80 at λex = 120 nm, although the noise level is high.

For the 10σg→6pσR bands, the R value does not decrease from those for the background absorption, from which results it has been concluded that the symmetry of the 6p Rydberg orbital is of σ type.
