The 14th Annual PIC International Road Race

The 14th Annual PIC International Road Race was held on Sunday, November 13, 2005.
A total of 1,262 runners-933 in the 5K, 238 in the 10K and 91 in the half marathon-participated in this year’s PIC Road Race, the largest race event in Guam.

As it says in the name, the event took on an international atmosphere. More than 150 runners from Japan participated in the race, taking home many prizes.

Mr. Watanabe, chairman of the Fujiyoshida Fire Festival Road Race (PIC’s sister race), started the half marathon at 5:30am, followed by Governor of Guam Felix Camacho for the 5K at 5:45am, and Nobuhiko Matsunaka, a Japanese professional baseball player for the 10K at 6:15am.

Matt Evans of Guam won the 5K race with 17 minutes and 8 seconds- 26 seconds faster than second-place finisher Yuta Nagata. David Townsel (17:40) took third. Leana Peters (20:56) was the top overall female finisher, and Nicole Layson(21:00) came in second, and Kelly Nicholas (21:54) took third.

Mark Bowyer ran 31:00 to win the 10K. Coming in second was Toshiharu Igarashi (33:36) who won the 10K at the Fujiyoshida Road Race in August, and Brent Butler (37:14) took third. Sumiko Sugibuch , another participant from Japan, was the top female runner of the race. Norika Jim (41:12) was second and Rina Amemiya, another Fujiyoshida winner, took third.

Takahiro Hosokawa (1:15.51), winner of the 20K of the Fujyoshida Race, won the half marathon. Kengo Nakagaki (1:24.05) was second and Kike Lilly (1:24:35) took third. Noriko Murakami(1:29.03), female winner of Fujiyoshida’s 20K, was the top woman. Dae Soon Kim (1:34.11) took second and Lisa Mason (1:42.30) was third. Winners of all categories received prizes, presented by Mr. Frank Shorter, an Olympic Champion.
